Cloisonné is a famous traditional handicraft in Beijing, also named as “Copper padding thread enamel”, shortened as “enamel” or“embedded enamel”. It is an utensil that is based on a copper mold, pinches soft flat copper wire into all kinds of decorative patterns, and then fill colored enamel glaze into the patterns. For it was popular in Jingtai period of Ming Dynasty, its craftsmanship is quite mature; its enamel glaze is mostly blue (pronounced as “lan” in Chinese), so it is called “Jingtailan”.

Cloisonné, also called Filigree Enamel with Copper Body, which appeared more than 600 years ago and was used for large household utensils and accessories, is one of the Beijing handicrafts with strong ethnic features.
